Dylan - College Freshman
Living in the honors dorm, Daum Hall, at the University of Iowa, Dylan is loving life. His roommate is from Johnston. If we had stayed living in Des Moines where we were, he and Eric would have graduated together from Johnston High School. The two of them get along great and have many of the same interests. FIFA soccer on PS3 or Xbox, a major in business, ESPN, both were National Merit Finalists... and are already talking about getting an apartment with a couple of other guys for their sophomore year. He is loving IOWA football - still sees his high school buddies on occasion - classes are going well -- Life Is Good!

Darn it -- Game #2
Mid-Prairie Boys 61,
West Liberty 40
The Golden Hawks bulled their way past the West Liberty Comets in Wellman on January 7 despite losing two of their key big men during the first quarter of the game.
Jordon Yotty and Dylan Hochstetler both went down with injuries before the first quarter was finished.
“Our two post players – Jordon Yotty and Dylan Hochstetler – only played about 5 minutes each before leaving the game with injuries,” said Coach Showatler. “So this put some of our players in different roles against a very competitive West Liberty squad. This cut our substitution rotation as Justin Hochstetler, Ryan Harris and Alex McKee-Crow had to play more minutes than normal.”
The Comets managed seven first-quarter points and trailed 32-19 at halftime as the Golden Hawks’ press was too much for them to handle.
“Our defense was excellent in holding West Liberty to only 40 points causing 22 turnovers and scoring 22 points on these turnovers,” commented Showalter. “Our guards – Robby Mostek, Michael Aldeman and Christian Swartzentruber - set the tone without our post players tonight by keeping good pressure on their shooters. Mostek played a good floor game with his passing and defense. Aldeman and Swartzentruber again led us offensively but did the job on the boards as well. Without the two post players, Jaemin Powell was our rebound leader in the game with some great effort on the boards.”
Powell snagged seven rebounds and scored eight points for the Hawks in the win.
Michael Aldeman led his team with 27 points including a 10-10 effort from the free-throw line, and 1-7 three-point shooting. Swartzentruber netted 12 points, going 4-11 from the field and netting four three-pointers. Justin Hochstetler shot 3-5 from the field to finish with six points, Ryan Harris scored four, and Robby Mostek and Jordan Yotty both netted two each.
Alex McKee-Crow, who plays off the bench, saw considerable action at the post for the Golden Hawks on Friday.
“At first it’s a little nerve racking because I haven’t got as much playing time as I’d like to have,” said McKee-Crow. “But once I get in there for a little while I get used to it. I’ve been practicing with the varsity squad all season long so we push it out in practice so I’m used to it.”
Jordon Yotty came out of the game when he got knocked in the eye during a scramble for a rebound in the first quarter. He was taken to the hospital to examine his eye.
“He’s a big factor on our team,” said McKee-Crow who often practices opposite Yotty. “We’re about the same height but he definitely has the weight advantage on me. He just makes you better because you have that kind of physical guy going against you all the time.”
Dylan Hochstetler hobbled off the court after turning his ankle on the offensive side of the court just minutes after Yotty went out. McKee-Crow said he’s pretty sure it was a minor injury and that Hochstetler would be back for the Golden Hawks soon.
“It’s a shame that he’s kind of hurt already but I have a feeling that he’s going to be back real soon,” said McKee-Crow. “It’s great to have him ready and healthy again.”
With their first swing through the Cedar Valley Conference lineup nearly over, the Golden Hawks have a pair of loses they’re eager to avenge – losses to West Branch and Regina. They’ll host West Branch later this week, and face Regina again on January 18.

First Game Back!
Mid-Prairie 76, North Cedar 49
The Golden Hawk boys basketball team rolled our to an early lead and dominated the North Cedar Knights all the way in a late game at Clarence, IA, January 4.
“We played extremely well when we finally got the game under way,” commented Mid-Prairie head basketball coach Don Showalter. “The power outage at Clarence delayed the girls and boys games so we did not get started until about 9:45.”
The boys followed the girls game after it was delayed for 90 minutes due to power outages.
The Golden Hawks netted 12 three-point baskets, including five from Christian Swartzentruber who finished with 15 points. Michael Aldeman put up 32 points including four treys in the win.
“Christian Swartzentruber started us out with some three-point shots and has shot the ball well from that distance all season,” said Coach Showalter. “Of course, Michael Aldeman turned in an All-State performance with his stat line but more importantly was his defensive intensity during the game.”
The Golden Hawks got out to 14-7 first-quarter lead, and led 36-22 at halftime, as Swartzentruber nailed four of his three-pointers in the first half. Justin Hochstetler also had two threes in the first half and Robby Mostek added one. Aldeman continued the long-range barrage in the second half, netting four threes, and Swartznetruber added his fifth in the second half.
The Hawks held North Cedar to seven first-quarter points and eight third quarter points, leading 54-30 after three quarters on their way to the 76-49 final.
“I was pleased with our intensity level especially on defense and Jaemin Powell did a great job on North Cedar All-Stater Jordan Hay, making him work for every shot,” said Showalter. “We had great team defensive play as well as we controlled the boards 27-15.”
Hay managed 22 points to lead his team in scoring.
Senior center Dylan Hochstetler finally got onto court for the Golden Hawks after recovering from rotator cuff surgery in August.
“[He] played very well, handing out four assists and grabbing four rebounds,” noted Showalter. “Our inside rotation of Powell, Jordan Yotty, Hochstetler and Alex McKee-Crow allowed us to stay strong on the glass for the entire game.”
Besides 32 points from Aldeman and 15 from Swartzentruber, the Golden Hawks saw 10 points from senior Justin Hochstetler who was 4-5 from the field, snagged five rebounds and had three assists.
“I have been impressed with the play of Justin Hochstetler off the bench for us. He has been a major contributor for us all season and has fit in well after not playing last season,” said Showalter. “Ryan Harris also has given us some intensity and energy in his role as a sub.”
Senior starter Robby Mostek is quietly being a major contributor on the varsity court this season as well.
“Mostek may not get much recognition but he has steadily improved for us and has become a major contributor in our starting line-up,” said Showalter. “It was nice to get AJ Young, Myles Coppes, Joel Born and Tim Chmelar in the game last night as well as these players work hard and have improved.”
The North Cedar boys basketball team are 7-2 with losses to Mid-Prairie and Regina both Cedar Valley Conference rivals. They’re currently ranked sixth at the Iowa Sports Connection (www.iowasportsconnection.com), and tied for tenth by the Des Moines Register (www.desmoinesregister.com).
